X-Rom Install and How-To Guide (NEW-updated on Jan 27 2004) Before you begin I highly recommend you PRINT these instructions or be able to refer to them during the install process. This guide will help you to install the X-Rom drivers and the Little Writer software. Please read this guide in FULL first BEFORE you begin. X-Rom Drivers Install Guide. 1. Do NOT Connect Your X-Rom Linker Yet to your computer (that means don't plug the linker (USB cable) into you computer) 2. Unzip the file "X-rom drivers.zip" 3. Install the program "X-rom Drivers.exe" 4. Follow Instructions of the Install 5. If you are using Windows-XP you will get a warning box just click "Continue" For users of Windows 2000 and Windows 98 you will NOT see this warning box 5. Now after you click "Finish" connect the X-Rom Linker to any free USB port on your PC Do NOT use a HUB use a direct free USB post. Hubs are not recommended due to the extra voltage they draw form the USB port. 6. A dialog box may appear asking you for a driver point it the "Program Files\X-Rom Drivers" (For Windows 2000 it does not appear for Windows 98 and XP it does appear) This will complete the install process and your X-Rom Linker will now be installed correctly. You can verify this by going to your control panel and clicking on system then open up "Device Manager" (for Windows 2000 and XP owners you have to click on hardware first) Once device manager is opened up you will see "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" (It's the last one at the bottom of the list) You should now see the "X-Rom GBA Link Port Cable" listed. If you do and don't have anything warning you that this driver is not installed correctly usually by a yellow marker then this means that your driver is installed correctly. 7. You're done for installing the X-Rom drivers on your PC. Note: If you are having any problems please go to www.help-forums.com Under Product Support Nintendo/GBA Products you can post your problems there I will do my best to answer them. X-rom Software Install Guide The X-rom uses a new version of Little Writer please download the latest version 1.0.8.0 1. Unzip the file "Little Writer 1.0.8.0.zip" 2. Install the software (just follow the instructions) 3. You're done (for installing the Little Writer software on your PC) Note: When you start the Little Writer Software it will say 1.0.7.2 We have been told that this is the version 1.0.8.0 Just use this version until another one is updated As soon as there is another version available make sure you uninstall the old version FIRST BEFORE you install another version on your PC. How-To Use the X-rom with Your GBA 1. Make sure that you have installed the driver and is installed correctly (see above) 2. Make sure that you the Little Writer software is installed correctly (see above) 3. Insert the X-rom linker into your GBA and make sure that the linker is connected to your computer USB port. (Do not use a USB hub) After more testing I have discovered that there are 2 ways to start the software to make it work correctly with your X-Rom ---First Way--- 1. Insert the X-rom linker into your GBA and make sure that the linker is connected to your computer USB port. (Do not use a USB hub) 2. Power up your GBA and quickly hold the "Start and Select" buttons AT THE SAME TIME. Now hold this for at least 5 seconds (you can count 1 thousand 1 to thousand 5) You can now let go of the start and select buttons and you will see the Gameboy Logo is showing and not the Nintendo Logo just below. 3. Start up the Little Writer software it will NOW detect the X-rom and will give a sort of double beep sound. Now the Nintendo logo will appear along with the Gameboy logo and BOTH logo's will NOW disappear and your GBA screen will NOW turn BLACK Note: You must hold down BOTH buttons (start and select) at the same time for at least 5 seconds for the Little Writer software to detect the X-Rom. 4. Now after a pause Little Writer will now ask you if you want to load Multiple GBA Rom or Single GBA ROM (multiple means you are adding more than 1 rom to your cart) by default multiple is selected first by the software. 8. You are now ready to use your new X-rom 9. Simple drag and drop any .gba file (even zip files are supported by the software) onto the Little Writer software and when you are satisfied click on "Flash" and let the software do it's work. When you are done close the Little Writer software. Now turn off the GBA then remove the linker form the PC and GBA. ---Second Way--- This is the second way of using the Little Writer with your X-Rom 1. Do NOT connect the Linker (USB cable) to your PC as of yet. You can connect the linker to your GBA if you like. 2. Now start up the Little Writer software as soon as it starts of it will go into simulate mode. You will get a dialog box that says "Choice" "What size card do you want to simulate?" Now simply click on OK 3 times 3. Insert the X-rom linker into your GBA and make sure that the linker is connected to your computer USB port. (Do not use a USB hub) 3. Note: You must hold down BOTH buttons (start and select) at the same time for at least 5 seconds for the Little Writer software to detect the X-Rom. 4. Now simply click on "Refresh" on the Little Writer software it will NOW detect the X-rom and will give a sort of double beep sound. Now the Nintendo logo will appear along with the Gameboy logo and BOTH logo's will NOW disappear and your GBA screen will NOW turn BLACK 5. At this point you may get a pause from the software don't be alarmed it is simply communicating with the X-Rom. Once it is done you will now see on the top window of the software (this is where the .gba files get dropped into the software) it will say "Empty 512 Mbits No save type file" 6. You are now ready to use your new X-rom 7. Simple drag and drop any .gba file onto the Little Writer software and when you are satisfied click on "Flash" and let the software do it's work. When you are done close the Little Writer software. Now turn off the GBA then remove the linker form the PC and GBA. Enjoy from the EB2K Team ---Troubleshooting--- In this section I will give solutions to fix your X-rom if you are having problems with it. 1. Make sure 100% that you X-rom drivers are installed properly. 2. Make sure that the Little Writer is installed correctly and you are using the latest version. If you have a old version uninstall it FIRST before you install the new version. 3. If you get the software to lock up or freeze DON'T click on the close or click the X on the Little Writer software simply unplug the USB cable from the PC and wait. This will then force Little Writer to go into simulate mode allowing you to NOW safely close the software without locking up your PC or the Little Writer software. 4. If the Little Writer software is not detecting your Linker then remove the USB cable from your PC wait until you can safely close the software and repeat the process. If software locks up close your GBA then remove USB cable from PC and click on "Stop" on the Little Writer software and wait for the software to unfreeze it self. Then safely close the software and repeat the process again. You can always reach me via www.help-forums.com under Product Support Nintendo/GBA Products.
